😴 How to Sleep

Survivor sleeping by the fireplace

We run a mod that adds sleep as an extra need to manage. How tired you are is shown by a fatigue meter beneath your stamina bar, next to a moon symbol.

When it drops to 25% your eyes will periodically start to close. Below 15% you risk randomly falling unconscious — which can kill you over a server restart, so don't let it get that low.

The meter takes 18 real-life hours to fall from 100% to 0% with zero exertion, or about 9 hours at maximum exertion (roughly the only time you'll hit max exertion is carrying a heavy object). Sprinting everywhere drains it a little faster, but not by much.

Restoring fatigue

Sleep restores the meter, with a few caveats:

  • Sleeping with a teddy, sleeping bag, medium tent, dead chicken, bear pelt, skull, or in front of a fire lets you restore the meter above 50%. Without one of these you can only reach 50% (day or night).
  • Sleeping in the daytime caps you at 75%; at night you can reach 100%.
  • You can also top up by drinking an energy drink (a soda can).
  • Adrenaline/Epi pens give infinite stamina briefly, but each one drains a set amount of your fatigue meter.

How to sleep

Open the emote wheel (the . key by default), select Poses, then Lie Down. Note that your hands must be empty before the game will let you lie down.

The fatigue meter looks like this:

If you're using a teddy to sleep, take it into your hands and drop it in your vicinity before lying down. And do remember to pick your teddy back up — it isn't persistent and only lasts a few hours on the ground. Many a teddy has gone missing this way. 😉

Boomlay's beds

If you sleep in one of the craftable beds from Boomlay's Things (see the Boomlay's Things guide for how to craft one), you recover fatigue twice as fast as with any other sleeping tool, and you can reach 100% during the day as well as at night.
